USEPA Administrator Praises Environment, Health and Safety Academy as Model for US-China Collaboration
[Oct 12th, 2010 Guangzhou]
On October 12, 2010, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson opened a speech to 300 students at the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China, by praising the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Academy as a model for achieving positive change through collaboration. "[The Academy has] already trained 1,500 managers to improve the environment, health and safety performance in Chinese factories," Jackson said. "It is making a real difference in the lives of workers and communities. It is strengthening the environment and the economy at the same time." The Academy, part of ISC's Guangdong Environmental Partnership, is a broad collaboration between U.S. and Chinese businesses, government agencies and nonprofits aimed at building the capacity of Chinese factory managers to increase environmental compliance, improve worker health, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Following the Administrator's address, USEPA General Counsel Scott Fulton, along with other key environmental leaders and activists in Guangdong, joined the leaders of the EHS Academy for a roundtable discussion to explore ways that the U.S. and China can increase cooperation on environmental governance and enforcement.
