New Greenhouse Gas Standards Unveiled in China for Corporate Value Chain and Products

[Nov 18th, 2011 Beijing]

On November 18th, 2011, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) launched the recently published GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) and Product Life Cycle Standards in Beijing. Leading multinational companies including Lenovo, Swire, Alcoa and DuPont joined the event to promote the business case for using these standards to drive GHG mitigation activities. Eight Chinese companies were involved in road testing the new standards, and China's National Institute of Standardization and the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission provided direct input.

As the managing partner for the US-China Partnership for Climate Action (PCA) program, WRI worked closely with these stakeholders to ensure the global standards are immediately accessible to Chinese companies and will improve China's capacity to assess and calculate GHG emissions using internationally vetted protocols -- a critical step in achieving and demonstrating real emissions reductions. One of the pilot Chinese companies, fabric manufacturer Wah Fung Group, has already used the Product Standard to identify activities that will lead to a 13 percent reduction in carbon emissions and a 50 percent reduction in water use.

Multinational companies are starting to use the standards to drive GHG reduction strategies across their supply chains, including in China. IKEA's use of the Product Standard has transformed its understanding of its emissions, and led them to set a new target to increase the efficiency of their products by 50% by 2015. This target will result in savings of millions of metric tons of GHG emissions annually not just for IKEA, but also for factories manufacturing its products and for customers using them around the world.
